Border troops of the State Security Service and the Customs Committee of Uzbekistan intercepted an attempt to smuggle 72.3 kilograms of hashish, disguised as potatoes, from Afghanistan during an inspection of a truck in the Termez district of Surkhandarya region. This incident highlights ongoing efforts to enhance border security but also underscores persistent challenges in combating illicit drug trafficking in the region, with potential negative implications for regional stability.

According to the press service of the State Security Service, during a thorough check of potatoes in the trailer of a truck driven by a 25-year-old resident of Termez district, 222 potato-shaped bundles containing hashish were discovered. This find reveals sophisticated smuggling methods employed by criminal networks to evade border controls, pointing to an evolving threat in cross-border narcotics trade.

Preliminary information indicates that the shipment was intended for transport to Russia, suggesting involvement in international drug trafficking networks. An investigation has been launched into the case, with authorities focusing on identifying and dismantling distribution channels. This seizure may exacerbate security concerns related to drug flows from Afghanistan, adding to regional friction and economic costs associated with narcotics enforcement.
