The Hydrometeorological Service of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzhydromet) has issued a warning about potential mudflow and flood events in the foothill and mountain areas of the country from March 31 to April 2–6, due to expected heavy rains. This alert highlights the risk of natural disasters stemming from abrupt weather changes, underscoring the vulnerability of these regions to environmental hazards.
According to the service, mudflows and floods could occur in foothill and mountainous zones, including rural and suburban localities. These events may lead to road washouts, damage to homes and infrastructure, and pose threats to life and property. Uzhydromet emphasized that there is a possibility of rainwater accumulation, which could result in the inundation of areas.
Uzhydromet has urged citizens residing in foothill and mountain areas, as well as tourists and drivers traveling through these regions, to take precautionary measures. The warning stresses the need to avoid hazardous zones, move vehicles to safe locations, and prepare for emergency situations. The service advises regularly monitoring weather updates and adhering to official alerts.
This warning is part of Uzbekistan's broader state policy on disaster prevention and management. While such announcements by Uzhydromet facilitate communication between the public and authorities, they also raise concerns about the adequacy of infrastructure and emergency preparedness in these vulnerable areas, pointing to ongoing challenges in mitigating natural disaster impacts.
