Under a proposal from Kazakhstan, March 26 could be designated as the International Day of the Aral Sea. This initiative holds particular significance for Central Asian countries, including Uzbekistan, aiming to remind the world of the need for joint action to save the Aral Sea amidst its ongoing ecological disaster.
The proposal is strategically important for Uzbekistan, as the majority of the dried-up seabed – the Aralkum Desert – is located within its territory. The consequences of the disaster, such as salt-sand storms, climate deterioration, and increased health issues among the population, pose severe challenges for the nation.
Establishing an International Day of the Aral Sea would not only highlight the ecological issues but also attract investments, scientific projects, and environmental programs to the region. Uzbekistan is already actively implementing initiatives to green the dried seabed, create forest areas, and develop infrastructure in the Aral Sea region.
The proposal is under consideration at a meeting of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, fostering regional cooperation. If approved, this date will serve as a global reminder of the necessity for collective efforts to rescue the Aral Sea.
