A convicted German right-wing extremist, Marla-Svenja Liebich, who identifies as transgender and had been on the run for months, has been arrested in the Czech Republic. The arrest took place in Krásná, approximately 100 km east of Prague, based on a European arrest warrant issued by German authorities.

Liebich was supposed to report to a prison in Chemnitz, Germany, in August 2025 to serve an 18-month jail term but failed to appear. She was previously a member of the neo-Nazi group Blood and Honour and was sentenced in July 2023 by the Halle District Court in Saxony-Anhalt to one year and six months in prison without parole for incitement to hatred, defamation, and insult. She appealed the sentence but lost the case.

At the end of 2024, Liebich changed her gender entry in official records from male to female and also altered her first name, utilizing Germany's Self-Determination Act that had recently come into force. This law simplifies the process for transgender individuals to update their legal gender. However, German media have raised questions about the sincerity of her transition, and Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt accused Liebich of abusing the act. Reports indicate that at the time of arrest, she was wearing men's clothing and had a shaved head.

A spokesperson for the Halle public prosecutor's office confirmed to the BBC that Liebich is currently in custody in the Czech Republic and is expected to be extradited to Germany. This case highlights the complex intersection of right-wing extremism and transgender rights, sparking debates over legal safeguards and potential misuse of progressive legislation.
