US lifestyle influencer Ashly Robinson died last week on 9 April while on vacation in the Tanzanian islands of Zanzibar with her boyfriend, Joe McCann. Her death, coming just days after her birthday and a marriage proposal from McCann, has sparked suspicion on social media, with users expressing doubt over the current narrative. Robinson's family is seeking answers into her death, stating that the trip was supposed to be "one of the happiest of trips," but instead, she was "found unconscious in her villa and taken to hospital, where her death was confirmed hours later."
Officials in Zanzibar released a statement on Tuesday saying that McCann's passport has been "withheld," although no arrests have been made and police previously stated he is not suspected of wrongdoing. Robinson's parents told the BBC they heard from McCann 11 hours after the incident thought to have led to her death, but with little detail, and he allegedly claimed Robinson was OK at the time. Later, the Zuri Zanzibar hotel, where they were staying, informed the family of her death, noting cooperation with authorities and the US embassy.
Confusion around her death has grown: initially, Zanzibar police reported that Robinson, 31, had attempted to take her own life, according to local outlet Mwananchi. North Unguja police chief Benedict Mapujira said the couple had a misunderstanding leading hotel management to split them into different rooms—something the hotel did not confirm. As of Tuesday, local police maintain that McCann is not suspected of wrongdoing, with Mapujira stating, "We cannot take legal action or detain him under these circumstances."
