German coach Roman Vidonyak of Uzbek grandmaster Javokhir Sindorov shared his thoughts following his protégé's victory at the Candidates Tournament. He emphasized that this win represents only the second stage of a four-stage plan in their strategy.
"This is not yet the biggest result. We have completed the second of four stages in our plan. The first was qualifying for the Candidates Tournament. The second was winning it. We have done that. Now the next stage is the match for the world chess crown. The most difficult is the fourth: reaching a 2800 rating level and consistently dominating tournaments. In their time, Garry Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen achieved this," stated Vidonyak.
The coach noted that reaching such a level will require at least two years of intensive work. He also detailed the preparation process: over the past year, nine training camps (mostly in Munich, each lasting 10-14 days) were conducted, utilizing around 40,000 systematized exercises to develop the player's thinking.
Roman Vidonyak began working with Sindorov at the start of 2025. Under his guidance, the chess player has won the World Cup, become the vice-champion of the Tata Steel Chess super-tournament, and secured an early victory at the Candidates Tournament. Now, a match for the world chess crown is anticipated in December between the 20-year-old Sindorov and the 19-year-old reigning champion Gukesh Dommaraju.
