Real Madrid’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League has sparked significant turmoil in Spanish football. The club lost 4-3 to Bayern Munich on the night, resulting in a 6-4 aggregate defeat, heightening the risk of a second consecutive trophyless season as they trail Barcelona by nine points in La Liga.

Interim head coach Alvaro Arbeloa described his team as having given “their souls and their lives,” but this may not suffice to secure his position. Spanish newspaper AS labeled the exit an “honourable exit that will not provide consolation or avoid another revolution.” Arbeloa, appointed in January following Xabi Alonso’s dismissal, has managed only 13 wins in 21 matches and struggled to motivate the squad at times.

A core issue for Real remains integrating star players like Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr, and Jude Bellingham without losing balance. Arbeloa deployed the trio effectively against Bayern, but the defense conceded four goals. Club president Florentino Perez rarely tolerates failure without consequences, making Arbeloa’s dismissal likely.

Potential successors include Jurgen Klopp, Zinedine Zidane, Didier Deschamps, Unai Emery, and Massimiliano Allegri. Klopp, who recently left Liverpool, dismissed reports of contact with Madrid as “nonsense,” but speculation persists. Zidane has a successful history with the club, though his return is uncertain. The demand for a “revolution” in Madrid intensifies as the club faces its first back-to-back trophyless seasons since 2008-2010.
