At least 15 people were killed and 88 others injured when a commuter train collided with an intercity train in Bekasi, east of the Indonesian capital Jakarta, the Jakarta Globe reported.
The accident occurred on the evening of April 27 near the Bekasi-Timur station. According to initial reports, the KRL commuter train first hit a taxi at a railway crossing before being struck by the Argo Bromo Anggrek intercity train traveling on the same track. The impact was concentrated on a women's carriage.
Rescue operations have been completed. None of the 240 passengers aboard the Argo Bromo Anggrek train were injured.
Jakarta's commuter trains are among the busiest modes of transport in the world's most densely populated city, Reuters noted. The agency highlighted that a significant portion of Indonesia's railway network is outdated, making accidents a common occurrence. In January 2024, at least four people died in a collision between two trains in West Java province.
