The concert of People's Artist of Uzbekistan Yulduz Usmanova, scheduled for May 9 at the Oceana Theater in Brooklyn, New York, has been canceled. The theater announced the cancellation on May 4.
The cancellation followed a protest campaign backed by local politicians and the Zionist community. Usmanova has been accused of anti-Semitism due to her support for Palestine and sharp criticism of Israeli actions.
On May 4, a press conference was held with Nassau County Executive (and New York gubernatorial candidate) Bruce Blakeman, local legislators Michael Novakhov and Alec Brook-Krasny, and activists from the United Zionists. They opposed holding the concert on Victory Day over Nazi Germany — May 9.
Blakeman sent an official letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio demanding the revocation of Usmanova's entry visa.
The singer herself stated on Instagram on May 5 that all tickets were sold and thanked her fans. Commenting on the cancellation, she emphasized her principled stance: "Jews gathered, politicians interfered — this is a plus and respect for us. Let them oppose... But if you, Zionist Jews, think I will apologize, you are deeply mistaken. I firmly believe in my values. First, I am against violence. Second, Palestine must be free, it is their land."
Usmanova said the US is not Israel and does not belong to Zionists, and she will continue to sing for the people. "Justice, insha'Allah, will surely prevail," the singer said.
Yulduz Usmanova has been an active critic of Israeli actions toward Palestine. In October 2023, she declared a boycott of Israeli goods.
