US President Donald Trump stated that the month-long ceasefire between the US and Iran is on 'massive life support,' calling it 'unbelievably weak' during a Monday Oval Office press conference. He emphasized that while the truce remains in place, its viability is extremely low.
Iran submitted a counter-offer to the US on Sunday, outlining demands to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump rejected the proposal outright, labeling it 'totally unacceptable' and a 'piece of garbage.'
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei defended the proposal, calling it 'responsible' and 'generous.' According to Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency, the offer includes an immediate end to hostilities on all fronts, a halt to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, and guarantees against further attacks on Iran.
Trump criticized Iranian leaders as 'very dishonourable people,' accusing them of reneging on an agreement to allow the removal of enriched uranium. He insisted Iran would 'never have a nuclear weapon.'
Tasnim quoted a source close to the negotiating team denying any provision in Iran's proposal to accept the removal of enriched nuclear material. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, demanded that Iran's uranium stockpile be 'taken out' before the war can end.
The US has been enforcing a naval blockade of Iranian ports to pressure Tehran, while Iran's blockage of the Strait of Hormuz has driven up global oil prices. The ceasefire, in effect since April, remains fragile amid mutual accusations.
