Germany is commemorating the 77th anniversary of its Basic Law (Grundgesetz), which came into effect on May 23, 1949. The constitution was drafted after World War II to prevent the recurrence of Nazi dictatorship and the Holocaust.

The Basic Law's 146 articles outline fundamental rights, state responsibilities, and democratic controls. Its first article states: "Human dignity shall be inviolable." Amendments require a two-thirds majority in both the Bundestag and Bundesrat.

A record number of over 300,000 people obtained German passports in 2025, a 6% increase from the previous year, following the legalization of dual citizenship. A further surge is expected next year as Ukrainian refugees become eligible.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called on citizens to actively uphold democracy, saying "Democracy needs active citizens." He urged voluntary work and set an example by gardening at a cemetery and helping at a nursing home.

Steinmeier emphasized that the Basic Law is a real achievement and that democracy requires commitment from every individual. He hopes to anchor the constitution's anniversary more strongly in public awareness beyond politics.
