Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been named the Premier League Player of the Season after guiding his club to a third-place finish and equaling the league's assists record with one game to spare.

Fernandes tied the record of 20 assists, jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, and also scored eight goals as United secured Champions League qualification.

The 31-year-old midfielder was nominated alongside Arsenal's Gabriel, David Raya, and Declan Rice, Manchester City's Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo, Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White, and Brentford's Igor Thiago.

Fernandes created a league-high 132 chances, far ahead of second-placed Dominik Szoboszlai with 89.

He was also named the Football Writers' Association Men's Player of the Year and received the club's Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award for the fifth time.

Fernandes has the opportunity to claim the record outright on Sunday when United travel to Brighton for the final game of the season.

The award is a rare recognition for a player from a non-title-winning side, the last being Kevin De Bruyne in 2020.

United's revival since sacking Ruben Amorim in January saw interim coach Michael Carrick appointed permanently on Friday.

Fernandes will represent Portugal at the 2026 World Cup, starting against Congo on June 17, followed by matches against Uzbekistan and Colombia.
