The FIFA World Cup 2026 promises to be a landmark event with 48 teams, three host nations (USA, Mexico, Canada), and a 39-day schedule. Organizers are integrating cutting-edge technology to enhance fan experience and assist referees.

The official match ball, “Trionda” (Spanish for “three waves”) by Adidas, features an inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor chip that captures data 500 times per second, tracking the ball’s acceleration and 3D movement. FIFA claims this provides real-time data to the VAR system, improving offside decisions.

In partnership with Lenovo, FIFA is introducing AI-powered 3D player avatars. Each player will be digitally scanned in about one second to create precise body dimensions. These models will enhance semi-automated offside technology and allow broadcasters to display offside calls more realistically.

Referees will wear body cameras at all 104 matches, offering fans a pitch-level view. Meanwhile, Mexican police will deploy robotic dogs, purchased for 2.5 million pesos ($145,000), to enter dangerous areas and stream live video to security forces.

The upgraded semi-automated offside technology now alerts officials when a player is 10cm offside, sending a real-time audio signal to their earpiece. However, it cannot handle subjective calls or situations where players are too close together.

Three-minute hydration breaks will be implemented in each half at the 22nd minute, regardless of weather conditions, to prioritize player welfare.
