A man has died after being attacked by a suspected 4.5-meter shark while spearfishing off the coast of Western Australia near Michaelmas Island. Police reported the incident on Saturday, stating the victim was fishing with his family when the attack occurred.
The man was brought ashore and treated by paramedics, but could not be revived. This marks the third fatal shark attack in Australia in just three weeks, raising concerns among local authorities and beachgoers.
State authorities confirmed that a 4.5-meter shark of unknown species was spotted by a member of the public near Michaelmas Island on the same day. The attack follows a similar incident two weeks ago at Kennedy Shoal in Queensland, and another off Rottnest Island near Perth days earlier.
According to conservation groups, Australia records around 20 shark attacks annually, but most are not fatal. Drowning remains a far greater risk than shark bites. The recent spate of attacks has prompted renewed calls for increased safety measures.
