The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off on Thursday at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with co-hosts Mexico facing South Africa in Group A. An 80,000-strong crowd is expected for the opening match.

The two teams previously met in the 2010 World Cup opener in South Africa, playing out a 1-1 draw. Siphiwe Tshabalala scored a stunning goal for the hosts, canceled out by Rafael Marquez's equalizer.

The 2026 tournament is the largest in history, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches across three host nations: the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The Estadio Azteca becomes the first stadium to host three World Cup opening matches (1970, 1986, 2026).

An opening ceremony will take place 90 minutes before kickoff, headlined by Shakira, J Balvin, and South African singer Tyla.

Mexico, making their 17th World Cup appearance, are unbeaten in their last eight matches and are favorites. However, the pressure is on to deliver a winning start. South Africa return after a 16-year absence for their fourth appearance.

South Africa coach Hugo Broos emphasized sticking to the game plan despite the hostile atmosphere. His team's preparations were hampered by visa delays. Broos believes his side can cause an upset.

In head-to-head records, Mexico have two wins, South Africa one, and one draw. Mexico's recent form: W-W-W-D-D; South Africa: D-D-L-D-L.

Broadcast details: Mexico — TUDN, Canal 5, Canal 9, Las Estrellas, Vix; South Africa — SuperSport, SportyTV, New World TV; UK — ITV; US — Fox.
