Brazil's women's national football team endured a chaotic 1-0 defeat to the United States in a friendly match in Fortaleza, with eight red cards shown to the home side. The match descended into disorder, particularly in the second half and after the final whistle.
Brazilian head coach Arthur Elias and three of his assistant coaches were sent off, while players Bia Zaneratto and Tarciane also received red cards. Two additional players were dismissed after the full-time whistle for dissent.
The only goal of the game came in the 63rd minute when Sophia Wilson's shot deflected off Isabela and past Brazilian goalkeeper Lorena, in front of a crowd of over 55,000. Brazil failed to register a single shot on target, while the US had six.
Elias and several assistants were ejected from the technical area during the second half. Brazil were reduced to nine players in stoppage time after Zaneratto received a second yellow card for pushing Emily Sonnett, followed by Tarciane's straight red card for elbowing Wilson.
The chaos continued after the final whistle, with Brazil's Kerolin and Ludmila both shown red cards for arguing with officials. It was the second of two matches for the US in Brazil, having lost 2-1 in the opener on Saturday in Sao Paulo.
Marta, a six-time FIFA World Player of the Year, came on as a substitute in the 80th minute, making her 212th appearance for Brazil. Dudinha suffered a right knee injury in a collision with Sonnett in the 30th minute and was stretchered off; she later returned to the bench on crutches.
The matches in Sao Paulo and Fortaleza were played at stadiums that will host the Women's World Cup next June and July. The US will begin their qualification campaign in November.
