Following Mexico, another tournament host — the United States — secured an early spot in the Round of 16 after winning their second group stage match. Before the game in Seattle, intrigue in Group D seemed promising: the Americans easily defeated Paraguay 4-1 in the first round, while Australia surprisingly beat Turkey 2-0. However, it became clear that there can be a huge difference between two victories.

The Australians handed the hosts the key to victory. Against Turkey, they defended as if they had exhausted their luck for months. This time, luck demanded repayment. American forward Folarin Balogun, starting in place of Christian Pulisic, burst into the box from the left flank and crossed, and defender Cameron Burgess turned the ball into his own net — 1-0.

The US team has received a gift from opponents in two consecutive matches. But such gifts usually come to those who deserve them.

After that, Mauricio Pochettino's men accelerated attacks on both flanks, easily changing the direction of play as if someone had imperceptibly switched gears. The second goal was a logical continuation: after a set piece, Alex Freeman slotted home the rebound, with VAR confirming the goal — 2-0.

After an hour of play, Australia finally came to life and even forced the Americans to sweat in defense. Tony Popovic's side tried to win a penalty but failed. The most unusual event in the closing stages was not an attack, but a cramp suffered by German referee Felix Zwayer, who received medical treatment on the field. It became clear: the players no longer wanted to trouble the referee.

In the third round on June 25, the US team needs only a draw against Turkey to finish top of the group. Australia will fight for a playoff spot against Paraguay.
