Ukrainian officials reported that a massive overnight attack on Kyiv involved ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drones, damaging residential buildings and civilian infrastructure. The assault was part of a broader wave of Russian strikes.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed on Telegram that 13 people were killed and 86 injured in the capital, with 70 requiring hospitalization. A search and rescue operation is underway in a damaged building in the Darnytskyi district.
A hotel roof caught fire on central Shevchenko Boulevard, and a direct hit from a Russian projectile caused six floors of a nine-story apartment building to partially collapse. Emergency crews were seen searching through the rubble.
According to Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, three dozen locations across the city were damaged. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, citing intelligence reports of a likely major assault, cut short his stay in Dublin.
The Russian attack follows Ukrainian drone strikes on Moscow earlier this week, including a major hit on an oil refinery in the Moscow region less than two weeks ago. Ukraine has been producing better long-range drones and striking deep inside Russia.
A new analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) suggests that over 90% of Russian casualties have come from drone attacks. Between February 2022 and June 2026, Russian forces suffered approximately 1.4 million battlefield casualties, while Ukrainian forces suffered between 525,000 and 625,000.
