The extended hospitalization of US Senator Mitch McConnell, the 84-year-old former Republican leader, has sparked concerns among his party colleagues about whether he will be able to return to his duties.
McConnell has not voted since June 11, and his office confirmed his hospitalization three days later. Staff have stated that he is “receiving excellent care” and “continues to improve,” but no details on his condition or treatment have been released.
Political commentator Scott Jennings said he spoke with McConnell for about 20 minutes and urged him to return to work. Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senator John Barrasso also reportedly spoke with him.
However, some lawmakers have expressed frustration over the lack of transparency. Utah Senator Mike Lee noted that “many of us aren’t speaking about Mitch McConnell’s condition because we know nothing about his condition.”
McConnell’s absence could harm Republicans, who hold a slim 53-47 majority. It already helped Democrats pass a resolution against the Iran war, with four Republicans breaking ranks.
Prolonged hospitalization may also complicate defense funding and other legislation. McConnell plans to retire in January 2027, but an early departure could trigger a special election in Kentucky.
