All quarterfinalists for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been determined, with Switzerland and Argentina claiming the final berths in the next stage of the tournament.
In the last Round of 16 match, Switzerland defeated Colombia 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation and extra time. This was the only match in the Round of 16 that was decided by a penalty shootout.
With this victory, the Swiss reached the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 1954.
Earlier in Atlanta, Argentina staged an impressive comeback to beat Egypt 3-2. Egypt started strongly: Yasser Ibrahim scored in the 15th minute, and Mostafa Ziko doubled the lead in the 67th. Argentina turned the game around late on.
In the 79th minute, Cristian Romero pulled one back after a pass from Lionel Messi. Four minutes later, Messi himself equalized, scoring his eighth goal of the tournament to extend his lead in the Golden Boot race. The defending world champions secured victory in the second minute of stoppage time through Enzo Fernández, assisted by Lautaro Martínez.
Notably, Messi missed a penalty in the first half – Argentina's second missed spot-kick of the tournament.
