At least 15 people have been killed in landslides triggered by Typhoon Bavi in the Philippines. A landslide early Friday hit Malapatan in the southern Sarangani province on Mindanao island, killing 10, according to the Philippine News Agency.
Another landslide in the southern province of Lanao del Sur claimed at least five lives, local media reported. Some victims in Sarangani were related, Malapatan Mayor Salway Sumbo Jr. said, adding that parts of the village were being evacuated as heavy rain continued.
Known locally as Inday, the typhoon entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Wednesday but weakened as it tracked northwest across the Philippine Sea near Northern Luzon.
The Philippine weather agency PAGASA issued alerts that while Bavi would not make landfall, its tail end could bring heavy rainfall and widespread flooding to several areas, including the capital Manila.
The super typhoon hit the US Pacific territories of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands on Monday, causing infrastructure damage but no casualties. It is now bearing down on other countries in the region.
Bavi is expected to dump rain on northern and eastern Taiwan and parts of Japan on Saturday before making landfall in China. Hundreds have been evacuated in Taiwan, with schools and offices closed.
Southern China is still reeling from Typhoon Maysak, which hit earlier this week, killing 39 after a breached dam flooded Nanning.
