At least eight people have been killed and 34 others are missing after a landslide struck Chongqing, a city in southwestern China, according to China Central Television.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon Beijing time in Pengshui County. Hundreds of rescuers are currently at the scene conducting search and rescue operations.

For safety reasons, authorities have evacuated more than 1,100 people from areas adjacent to the danger zone. The search for the missing continues.
