Russia launched a major ballistic missile attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, overnight, Ukraine's air force said early Sunday. Witnesses reported several explosions, including from air defense systems. An AFP journalist said one blast was so powerful it set off car alarms across the city center.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported multiple fires in residential and non-residential areas, including a dormitory, a residential block, and a supermarket. Emergency services were deployed. At least seven people were injured, one treated at the scene. The city military administration said one person was killed, though Klitschko did not confirm any deaths.
The attack came a day after Ukrainian drones destroyed e-commerce warehouses in Russia's Moscow and Tambov regions, killing at least eight and causing major fires. On the same day, Russian strikes killed at least two in Ukraine.
Russia's full-scale invasion is now in its fourth year. Both sides have repeatedly used drone strikes, but Moscow is increasingly using ballistic missiles against Kyiv and other targets. Kyiv has warned of dwindling stocks of interceptor missiles used to block Russian ballistic missiles.
