The Riga District Court in Jurmala has begun hearing a criminal case against two citizens of Uzbekistan, Akbar Abdukhakimov (born 1984) and Bekhruz Sharipov (born 1993), accused of cruel treatment of a bird resulting in its death.
The incident occurred last spring in the village of Carnikava on the banks of the Gauja River. According to the indictment, on March 30, 2025, the men lured a swan with food, after which one of them grabbed the bird by its wings and threw it to the ground. The attacker held the swan with one hand while breaking its neck and punching it in the head with the other. When the bird stopped resisting, the second accomplice opened a black garbage bag, into which they placed the swan. They carried the bag to the trunk of a car and fled the scene.
The crime was committed in front of three minor witnesses, whose testimony helped law enforcement quickly identify the suspects. Information about the incident was received by the State Police on March 31 from the municipal police of Adazi region after local residents reported it.
After their arrest, the men initially claimed they were celebrating a holiday and took the bird for entertainment. Later, they changed their testimony, asserting that they had taken the swan to Riga and simply released it on the roadside. The court is now to examine all the evidence presented and make a final decision in the case.
