The Justice Ministry of Germany's state of Lower Saxony confirmed on Tuesday that a man suspected of killing six people at a youth and women's shelter in the town of Stade last month died by suicide in his cell.

Identified as Fatih Khan G. due to Germany's privacy laws, the suspect allegedly opened fire at the center for mothers and children, killing six welfare workers. The ministry stated there was “no indication of third-party involvement” in his death.

According to authorities, his three-month-old daughter and her 34-year-old mother were residing at the shelter. G. had been in a custody dispute with his former partner over the baby, who showed signs of shaken baby syndrome.

He had reportedly previously threatened a doctor at a medical practice where his daughter had been seen. On June 29, he came to the shelter to allegedly discuss accusations he had physically abused the baby. After the shooting, he attempted to flee in a car but was caught shortly thereafter by police.
