Hunter Biden, the younger son of former US President Joe Biden, has provided an update on his father's cancer diagnosis in a candid interview with BBC's Newsnight. He described the former president's condition as 'debilitating' and revealed that the cancer has metastasized to his bones.
'It's really hard, Paddy, and it's really sad to watch,' Hunter Biden told host Paddy O'Connell. 'The only thing that I say about my dad about his health right now is I wish he would complain more because it's not good. The cancer has spread. It's metastasized into his bones and further. It's very painful.'
In May 2025, Joe Biden announced that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had already spread to his bones. This came approximately 10 months after he dropped out of the 2024 presidential race, following concerns about his age and a disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump on June 27, 2024.
During that debate, Biden appeared stiff and lost his train of thought, at one point stumbling over his words and declaring, 'We finally beat Medicare.' His wife, Jill Biden, later said she feared he was having a stroke. Hunter Biden described watching the debate alone and being 'shocked,' noting his father had a 'hundred-yard stare.' He speculated that the cancer diagnosis, which was unknown at the time, may have contributed to the performance.
In the interview, Hunter Biden also addressed the controversial pardons his father issued before leaving office, including a 'full and unconditional pardon' for Hunter himself. He acknowledged that the pardons were 'easily criticised and for good reason,' but maintained that his father's fears about Trump seeking revenge were justified.
Hunter Biden has been at the center of numerous controversies, including a felony conviction for gun possession while under the influence of drugs and a guilty plea to federal tax evasion charges. Joe Biden's pardon of his son, along with other figures like Anthony Fauci, drew sharp criticism from observers who questioned the broad nature of the pardons.
