North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has allegedly arrived in the Chinese border city of Dandong utilizing a newly opened bridge, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, which cited an anonymous South Korean government source. This visit on Saturday took place roughly a week after the bridge linking the two nations was officially inaugurated, fully 12 years after its initial construction was completed. The event highlights the ongoing economic cooperation between Beijing and its nuclear-armed neighbor, a dynamic that remains complex despite shared strategic interests.
China continues to serve as North Korea’s primary trading partner and an essential provider of diplomatic, economic, and political backing for the isolated state, though bilateral ties have historically experienced periods of friction. "Kim arrived in Dandong through the New Yalu River Bridge earlier in the day," Yonhap reported, detailing the crossing. The four-lane structure was finished back in 2014, but its operational launch faced prolonged delays resulting from a severe lack of connecting highways and proper customs processing facilities on the North Korean side of the border.
Reports indicate that Kim’s previous known trip to China occurred in September 2025 to participate in the 80th Victory Day celebrations held in Beijing, during which he held summit talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Furthermore, Xi supposedly undertook a state visit to North Korea in June as a visible gesture of improving bilateral alignment between the two allies.
