Hungary's parliament has elected András Baka as the country's new president. The 73-year-old jurist was the sole candidate and secured the necessary votes.

The session was broadcast on the official channel of Prime Minister Péter Magyar. The Tisza Party selected Baka from ten candidates. He is a legal scholar who, in 1991, became the first Hungarian judge at the European Court of Human Rights, serving there for 17 years.

He served as President of the Supreme Court from 2009 to 2011. He was removed as part of judicial reforms initiated by former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

In 2016, the European Court of Human Rights ruled this removal unlawful and ordered the authorities to pay compensation. He resigned in 2020.

The previous president, Tamás Sulyok, left office under pressure from the new prime minister. In July, the Tisza Party, holding a constitutional majority, initiated a constitutional amendment terminating the head of state's powers.

Sulyok signed the law but expressed disagreement. The duties of the president were temporarily performed by parliamentary speaker Ágnes Forsthofer.
