A military transport plane carrying new banknotes from the Central Bank crashed in Bolivia, killing at least 15 people. The Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft was arriving at El Alto airport near La Paz. After landing, the plane overshot the runway and ended up on a highway, damaging several vehicles.
Some of the banknotes were scattered at the crash site, leading to a crowd gathering to collect the money. Police used tear gas and water from fire trucks to disperse the people.
Central Bank President David Espinoza stated that the scattered banknotes are not legally valid as they had not yet been put into circulation. He urged citizens to return the money and warned that keeping it would be considered a crime. The amount of money being transported was not disclosed.
