US President Donald Trump has announced that if the Republican Party wins both chambers of Congress in the November midterm elections, he will propose paying $5,000 to every American adult. The BBC reported this. Trump referred to these payments as "dividends."
"If Republicans win, you win with us and you get five thousand dollars," Trump said in a speech at the opening ceremony of the Republican Party convention in Dallas. He did not provide details on how the plan would work or how it would be funded, only emphasizing that the money must be spent within the US. "We don't want you going to Canada to spend that money," he said. "We don't want you going to China or Germany either. You have to spend that money on United States soil."
Vice President JD Vance linked the plan to revenues Trump allegedly generated for the US government through tariffs. The plan has sparked controversy. Democrats called it an "empty promise," and others questioned its legality. In the context of voter outreach during an election year, a US president offering such payments to Americans is likely the first time in history, according to the BBC.
Nearly 270 million adults live in the US, meaning $5,000 to each would cost the US government approximately $1.3 trillion. Such payments could further increase the federal budget's annual deficit of nearly $1.8 trillion, according to the Associated Press. The BBC notes that this is not the first time Trump has promised such payments — he previously proposed $2,000 checks funded by customs revenues.
