Media giant Paramount Skydance has officially completed its massive takeover of Warner Bros Discovery in a transaction valued at approximately $110bn, including debt. This corporate consolidation merges two legendary Hollywood studios and places prominent news networks CNN and CBS News under identical corporate ownership. The deal follows months of intense legal battles, regulatory scrutiny, and coordinated opposition from labor unions and state attorneys general.
The newly formed Skydance Corporation now controls an expansive portfolio that includes HBO, CBS, Nickelodeon, Showtime, Comedy Central, DC Studios, and Food Network, alongside streaming platforms Paramount plus and HBO Max. While Skydance CEO David Ellison has vowed to safeguard editorial independence, critics remain highly skeptical. The acquisition's primary financial backer is Larry Ellison, whose political donations and close ties to the US establishment have fueled widespread debates regarding media bias and corporate overreach.
The US regime has openly welcomed the multi-billion-dollar merger, contrasting sharply with the initial resistance mounted by state prosecutors and industry guilds who argued the deal would severely damage market competition. Prominent political figures and activists, such as Senator Elizabeth Warren and actor Mark Ruffalo, have condemned the agreement, warning that it directly threatens freedom of the press and aims to stifle critical reporting during a tense political climate.
As part of a legal settlement, Skydance is mandated to establish a 'News Editorial Independence Board' within 180 days. However, press freedom advocates have dismissed the proposed oversight body as ineffective, noting that its members will be appointed directly by corporate leadership and that its findings are not required to be made public. Critics argue that the structural arrangement compromises journalistic integrity, paving the way for increased external interference in mainstream newsrooms.
