Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced plans to price his Starlink satellite internet service affordably in India to challenge Mukesh Ambani's low-cost Reliance Jio. This aggressive commercial positioning comes just days before Jio's parent company launches the country’s largest-ever initial public offering, targeting a staggering valuation of $106bn.

The American entrepreneur supposedly argued that robust market competition would ultimately benefit average Indian citizens by expanding their choices, even if it allegedly cuts into Ambani's profits. Mobile data in India remains among the cheapest globally, priced at approximately 7.74 rupees ($0.08) per gigabyte, creating a uniquely challenging environment for high-cost market entrants.

In the lead-up to these developments, the US-born billionaire has launched public criticisms against the Indian authorities, accusing them of stalling Starlink's licensing process to favor the dominant market leader. Meanwhile, the Indian government has firmly denied any regulatory bias, maintaining that all pending satellite ventures, including Starlink and Jio, are simply awaiting mandatory security clearances.
