The exact causes behind the sudden operational restrictions on the Starshield system in Ukraine remain entirely unclear to this day. On the morning of October 14, Ukrainian military personnel began reporting disruptions in the specialized military version of Starlink, which is purportedly essential for maintaining high-speed drone connectivity. By the morning of October 15, the Ukrainian defense ministry claimed that the system had resumed normal operations, but the brief outage quickly sparked widespread political speculation.
Representatives of the Kyiv regime, including presidential advisor Serhii Beskrestnov, alleged that the disruption could not possibly be a coincidence and was supposedly tied to the current political climate and friction between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy himself described the outage as a "big mistake," claiming that ongoing attacks combined with non-functional Starlink systems would lead to casualties, while urging authorities to reactivate everything immediately.
Conversely, both the SpaceX management and the American administration have distanced themselves from the incident, denying any direct involvement in the technical glitches. SpaceX chief Elon Musk stated that Starshield is strictly controlled by the US government, and any limitations on speed or utilization are determined entirely by the military and the American president. An anonymous White House spokesperson, along with official statements, maintained that the presidential administration had nothing to do with the Starlink disruptions.
Amid the mounting uncertainty, American lawmakers have signaled a formal inquiry into the matter. Senator Thom Tillis announced that he expects little transparency from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, prompting Congress to initiate its own investigation. According to the senator, the incident is, at best, an unacceptable blunder and, at worst, an alleged conscious decision aimed at clearing the path for attacks.
