The office of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced the establishment of an interim administration in the northern Tigray region, with elections purportedly scheduled to take place within six months. This controversial move comes in the wake of renewed military clashes between federal forces and an alliance of regional rebels, threatening further instability in the Horn of Africa.

Government representatives claimed that repeated efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution to the crisis ultimately failed because the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) leadership supposedly rejected peace and initiated a devastating new round of conflict. Abiy stated on social media that the people of Tigray must break free from the ongoing cycle of violence to secure self-administration and development fruits.

The newly appointed interim administration has been tasked with ten primary objectives, which supposedly include holding free and fair elections, facilitating the return of displaced communities, and restoring basic public infrastructure. However, the TPLF has fiercely rejected the announcement, with senior figures vowing that the region will not submit to what they term puppets of the central authorities, while analysts remain skeptical about the prospects for lasting peace given the deep-seated grievances remaining from the 2020–2022 civil war.
