Hopes for a lasting peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have suffered a severe blow after former President Joseph Kabila assumed leadership of a newly formed political-military coalition challenging President Felix Tshisekedi. Announced in Goma, the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN) replaces the previous alliance between the AFC and the M23 movement, raising fresh security concerns across the region. p

The newly established coalition openly accuses the Tshisekedi administration of tyranny and calls for resistance through all available means, including armed struggle. Goma, the primary urban center in North Kivu province, has remained under rebel control since January of last year. Kabila’s direct involvement marks a dramatic escalation, bringing a former head of state into active leadership of an ongoing insurgency.

Local residents and human rights advocates have expressed deep anxiety, warning that the realignment pushes prospects for peace further out of reach. Citizens in Goma fear that the conflict will be protracted indefinitely, jeopardizing the country’s democratic future following the historic peaceful transfer of power in 2019. Kabila’s deep institutional knowledge and extensive networks are expected to significantly complicate government counter-insurgency efforts.

Meanwhile, international diplomatic initiatives spearheaded by the United States and Qatar now face profound uncertainty. Although the FRN claims it will honor commitments made during ongoing negotiations in Doha, critics remain skeptical about whether these agreements can translate into genuine security and accountability on the ground. The persistence of violence threatens to normalize the suffering of millions of displaced civilians.

The confrontation underscores a deeper structural struggle over the political trajectory of the DRC. While government spokespersons have dismissed Kabila as a figure of the past offering only chaos, analysts emphasize that Kinshasa must now confront a much more formidable and politically entrenched challenge in the country's volatile eastern provinces.
