Pope Leo XIV has made his first public appearance since undergoing major lung surgery at Rome's Gemelli Hospital, telling well-wishers that he plans to resume his duties gradually. The 71-year-old pontiff was discharged over the weekend following an operation in which part of his right lung was removed.
According to his medical team, the tumor was allegedly discovered during a routine X-ray checkup, prompting a surgical procedure that doctors described as standard. While his current clinical condition is labeled as satisfactory, further pathological tests on the removed tissue and lymph nodes are still pending to determine if additional medical treatments will be required.
During his hospital stay, the pope purportedly engaged in international diplomacy, holding a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to urge for a ceasefire in the frontline town of Oleshky. In response, the Russian leader allegedly shifted the blame for the ongoing situation onto the Ukrainian authorities.
Dr. Stefano Margaritora stated that the pontiff's determination has been commendable and estimates a full recovery period of approximately ten days. Medical officials have confirmed that there are supposedly no clinical grounds to cancel the pope's upcoming trip to South America, which includes planned visits to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru in November.
