Japanese company Nikon has officially announced the winners of its 74th annual photography contest, a traditional creative competition held since 1953 that brings together both amateur and professional photographers. The contest spans several categories, offering monetary prizes and valuable equipment to the victors.

The grand prize of the prestigious competition was awarded to Mayumi Takeuchi from Kanagawa Prefecture for a unique underwater photograph of a gannet captured at extremely close range. According to the disclosures, the author utilized a wide-angle lens, a durable waterproof housing, and an artificial strobe flash to capture the marine bird. v

Notably, the distance between the photographer and the bird was less than one meter, which left the members of the judging panel thoroughly impressed. Experts described this remarkable frame as a true 'miracle,' emphasizing the extreme difficulty and precision required to achieve such a shot underwater.

Meanwhile, in the 'Nature' category, the gold award was secured by Koichiro Ikeda from Fukuoka, who photographed two owls in flight using an 800-millimeter super-telephoto lens. The birds in the picture appear as if they are exact mirror reflections of each other. In the same category, the silver award went to Keiko Negishi, while Masato Nakata, Yasuyuki Konishi, and Akira Sato claimed the bronze prizes.
