Argentine football star Lionel Messi has supposedly been awarded the prestigious 2026 Princess of Asturias Award in sports. The official ceremony took place at the Campoamor Theater in Oviedo, featuring the participation of King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, and Princess Leonor, who handed over the accolade.

Messi has reportedly become the first-ever football player to win the award individually rather than as part of a team since its establishment in 1987. Furthermore, he stands as the first Argentine recipient in the history of the prize. The jury selected him from 27 candidates across 12 countries, praising his athletic career alongside his charitable efforts in supporting children's education and healthcare.

However, the decision by the European-based foundation sparked considerable controversy and public debate. In the wake of sporting tensions between European and Argentine fans, numerous petitions emerged on the Change.org platform demanding that Messi be stripped of the honor. The foundation reportedly chose not to issue any public response to the backlash.

The event held significant personal weight for the player. According to his statements, his late father Jorge, who passed away in August, had eagerly anticipated this recognition and encouraged him to travel to Spain. The award includes a cash prize of 50,000 euros and a commemorative sculpture by Joan Miró.
