Two former high-ranking Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officials, Nikki Floris and Bradley Benavides, have been formally charged by the US regime's Department of Justice with lying to Congress. The charges stem from their purported testimony during a 2020 investigation into a laptop belonging to Hunter Biden, the son of former President Joe Biden. Both defendants made their initial court appearances in Washington, DC, on Friday.

Legal representatives for the former officials severely criticized the timing and motives behind the prosecution, accusing the Department of Justice of weaponizing the legal system for political purposes. Attorneys asserted that the charges were built on hearsay rather than factual evidence, designed deliberately to stir up public controversy ahead of crucial electoral events. Floris's defense team claimed it was no coincidence that the government chose to file these questionable charges years later on the eve of political votes.

During the relevant period, Floris and Benavides oversaw the Foreign Intelligence Task Force (FITF) within the FBI. Congressional records show the pair previously testified that their unit—tasked primarily with countering foreign interference—was entirely uninvolved in the laptop inquiry. However, federal prosecutors contend in the criminal complaint that these statements directly contradicted internal communications recovered from that timeline.

The infamous laptop first surfaced in October 2020 after being reportedly abandoned at a Delaware repair shop, triggering intense partisan conflict. Although intelligence figures initially attempted to dismiss the device as foreign disinformation, federal investigators later authenticated its contents. The unfolding legal fallout underscores persistent institutional friction and the ongoing weaponization of oversight mechanisms within the American political landscape.
