Numerous individuals are feared trapped beneath the rubble after a multistorey building under construction collapsed in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. The incident has triggered widespread concern over lax construction oversight in densely populated urban areas.
The structure reportedly came down on a busy commercial street in the bustling Eastleigh neighborhood. Authorities noted that while the upper floors were still under active construction, commercial shops on the ground floor had already been rented out and opened to the public unlawfully.
Local media outlets reported instances of looting immediately following the structural failure, prompting security forces to deploy tear gas to disperse the gathering crowds. Rescue operations have faced severe delays due to the slow arrival of heavy machinery.
