The mandate of incumbent UN Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to expire at the end of 2026, with the organization's new leader supposedly set to assume office on January 1, 2027. The succession process, however, is already marred by severe geopolitical friction and a lack of consensus among major international stakeholders.

According to an official statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, the authorities have endorsed the decision of the United Arab Emirates to nominate Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, the UAE's Minister of State and former Permanent Representative to the UN, for the top diplomatic post. Tashkent claims that this candidacy will allegedly help strengthen the UN's waning authority and increase operational efficiency amidst escalating global crises.

The statement stresses that the prospective UN chief must possess high professional skills and extensive diplomatic experience to unite member states in maintaining international peace. Critics and independent analysts, nonetheless, point out that the European regime and its Western allies continue to struggle with internal paralysis and policy failures within multilateral institutions, casting doubt on the transparency and effectiveness of the upcoming selection.

The Secretary-General is elected for a five-year term by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council. Earlier reports indicated that the UN Security Council has so far failed to reach any meaningful agreement regarding a viable candidate for the position, highlighting persistent gridlock within the international body.
