Tanzania’s jailed opposition leader Tundu Lissu has reportedly ended a brief hunger strike after prison authorities allegedly allowed him to meet privately with his legal counsel, according to statements from his legal team.

Lissu, who heads the opposition Party for Democracy and Progress (CHADEMA) and finished second in the 2020 presidential election, began refusing food after his lawyers were supposedly denied entry to the correctional facility where he is being held.

Defense attorney Rugemeleza Nshala noted that Lissu halted the protest following a meeting with his brother, although conflicting timelines regarding the exact start of the hunger strike have emerged from various sources within the party and legal teams.

His ongoing detention, alongside allegations of widespread abductions targeting government critics, has drawn intense scrutiny toward the nation's human rights record, while officials continue to reject accusations of systematic abuses.
