The United Nations has formally demanded an urgent, independent, and thorough investigation into the death of an employee who passed away while in detention in Yemen. The alarming incident sheds light on the severe operational risks and deteriorating security conditions faced by international personnel in the conflict-torn nation.

Mohammad el-Shami, a staff member with the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR), reportedly died over a month ago, though his family was only recently informed of the tragedy. The Houthi authorities have allegedly failed to provide any credible explanation regarding the exact circumstances and cause of his death, prompting widespread international condemnation.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk demanded full transparency from the Houthi leadership, emphasizing that the grieving family deserves to know the truth. El-Shami had been arbitrarily held since June 2024, alongside more than 60 other UN and NGO personnel, under unproven accusations of partaking in an alleged intelligence network.

Adding to the mounting pressure, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that he was deeply appalled by the death and reiterated calls for accountability. Amid escalating safety concerns and persistent threats to humanitarian workers, the UN has previously been forced to suspend operations in Houthi-controlled territories.
