Irish middle-distance runner Ciara Mageean, renowned for winning European gold and competing in two Olympic Games, has passed away at the age of 34 following a battle with cancer. According to a statement shared by her family on the athlete's official social media account, she passed away early Sunday morning surrounded by her loved ones.

Mageean had been undergoing treatment for bowel cancer after publicly disclosing her diagnosis in July 2025, later revealing that the disease had reached an advanced stage. Her untimely passing comes mere weeks after she married her long-term partner in Belfast, casting a shadow over what should have been a joyous new chapter in her personal life.

Hailing from Portaferry in County Down, Mageean cemented her legacy as one of the island's premier middle-distance athletes, breaking multiple records across both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. She competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the rescheduled Tokyo Games in 2021, culminating in her career-defining triumph at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome, where she claimed the 1,500-metre title. However, a subsequent Achilles tendon injury cruelly denied her the opportunity to compete at the Paris Olympics later that year.

Throughout her illness, Mageean purportedly maintained a resilient outlook, expressing gratitude for her athletic career and stating she sought joy in everyday moments. Tributes have poured in from sports federations and political figures alike, who praised her tenacity, athletic accolades, and indomitable spirit in the face of insurmountable adversity.
