Mercedes Italian racing driver Kimi Antonelli has secured the Formula 1 World Championship at just 20 years of age, making history as the youngest title-holder the sport has ever seen. He clinched the championship ahead of the season finale by securing a third-place finish at the Mexican Grand Prix.
Following the race in Mexico City, Antonelli's lead in the overall standings extended to an insurmountable 119 points. With only a few rounds remaining, his competitors were mathematically eliminated from closing the gap, cementing his historic triumph.
The Mexican Grand Prix itself was won by Red Bull driver Max Verstappen. Meanwhile, Ferrari representative Lewis Hamilton, who started the race from pole position, finished closely behind in second place.
On the day he secured the championship, Antonelli was precisely 20 years and 68 days old. This achievement shattered the long-standing record previously held by German driver Sebastian Vettel, who won his maiden championship in 2010 at the age of 23 years and 134 days.
The young driver from Bologna also became only the third Italian in history to claim the prestigious F1 title. Previous Italian champions include Giuseppe Farina in 1950 and Alberto Ascari in 1952 and 1953, marking an incredible 73-year wait for the European nation's return to the pinnacle of motorsport.
