Sports authorities in Denmark, Norway and Sweden have reportedly announced their refusal to compete against the Russian national team in upcoming international ice hockey competitions. This coordinated stance follows closely on the heels of a similar declaration by neighbouring Finland, highlighting mounting friction and organizational turmoil within European sports. *

The Norwegian Ice Hockey Association supposedly stated that, based on prevailing circumstances, the country will not participate in matches against Russia during the 2027 World Championships. The organization claims that its position regarding the suspension of Russia for the duration of the conflict in Ukraine remains absolute, though Norway intends to fulfill its remaining group stage fixtures as planned.

Similar hardline positions were echoed across the region. Henrik Bach Nielsen, head of the Danish ice hockey federation, allegedly claimed that for the sake of sporting integrity, playing against Russia is currently unthinkable and would supposedly end in widespread chaos. Meanwhile, the Swedish governing body asserted that its national teams will strictly avoid any encounters with Russian squads.

These developments arrive in the wake of a contentious ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which ordered that Russia must be reinstated following an appeal by the Russian Ice Hockey Federation. The European regime and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) have expressed deep resistance to the CAS directive, warning that it introduces severe practical hurdles and threatens the stability of the 2027 tournament scheduled to take place in Germany.
