️ The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the postponement of the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which was scheduled to commence in mid-March. In a statement on its website, CAF confirmed that the tournament in Morocco will not kick off on March 17 as planned, but is instead rescheduled for the summer months.
️ CAF's statement read: "After discussions between CAF and its partners, FIFA and other stakeholders, CAF decided to reschedule the dates of the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026, to 25 July – 16 August 2026 to ensure the success of this important women's competition." However, the organization did not provide a specific reason for the change, referring only to "certain unforeseen circumstances."
️ This announcement comes nearly three weeks after CAF President Patrice Motsepe had ruled out any schedule alterations. The tournament also doubles as a qualifying event for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil. In recent weeks, rumors persisted that host nation Morocco was seeking to withdraw from its hosting commitment, with South Africa's deputy minister of sport stating her country would step in as a replacement, though this was later denied by South Africa's sports minister.
️ As of now, Morocco is still expected to host the tournament, albeit several months later than originally planned. This will mark Morocco's third consecutive time hosting the WAFCON. CAF struck a positive note, adding: "Preparations for the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026 are underway and all the parties are confident that it will be very successful."
