The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will provide a loan of up to €20 million to the joint venture Samarkand England Eco-Medical (SEEM) and its subsidiary Bayan Medical in Uzbekistan to support local pharmaceutical production. The funds are aimed at expanding the manufacturing of infusion solutions, tablets, and capsules.
SEEM will introduce new production lines, including for infusion solutions, antibiotics, and other products. Bayan Medical will modernize production by improving energy efficiency and purchasing new equipment. The project will help increase the share of local pharmaceutical production, as 75% of medical products in the country are imported.
Bayan Medical will launch an internship program for graduates and create jobs for people with disabilities. The EBRD has invested $6.9 billion in 205 projects in Uzbekistan, making the country the largest recipient of bank funds in Central Asia over the past six years.
