In April, a truck carrying 1,728 bee colonies crossed the border in the Astrakhan region of Russia, but it never arrived at its intended quarantine point in the Kurgan region.

Quarantine for bees is mandatory because southern insects can carry dangerous infections and parasites. According to reports, the quarantine point in the Kurgan region was not ready to receive the bees—there were no hives or equipment available.

Public activists have filed complaints with the Rosselkhoznadzor, and beekeepers have submitted statements to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the prosecutor's office. The truck and driver are being sought nationwide.

Uncontrolled import of bees could lead to mass die-offs of local bee colonies and threaten honey production.
