A court in Kazakhstan has authorized the compulsory enforcement of an arbitration award requiring Russian energy giant Gazprom to pay Ukrainian state-owned company Naftogaz approximately $1.4 billion. The announcement was made by Naftogaz CEO Serhiy Koretsky.

'This is the first public foreign court decision that allows compulsory enforcement of this arbitration award in a separate jurisdiction,' Koretsky stated. He noted that the company continues efforts to enforce the ruling in various countries and to locate assets for recovery.

The dispute centers on the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory. Since May 2022, Gazprom halted payment for services after Ukraine refused to transport gas through a section in the occupied Luhansk region. Naftogaz claimed it did not refuse obligations and proposed shifting the transit point to the Sudja route in Sumy region.

The Russian side allegedly rejected the changes and stopped paying for contracted transit volumes. In response, Naftogaz initiated arbitration proceedings in Switzerland. In 2025, the arbitration ruled in favor of the Ukrainian company, and in March 2026, the Swiss Federal Supreme Court dismissed Gazprom's appeal, finalizing the decision.

The Kazakh court ruling opens the door for Naftogaz to seek seizure and recovery of Gazprom's assets to satisfy the arbitration award.
